Where the Pavement Ends

Lake Barrett is my thirteen-year-old grandson and a terrific traveling companion. We just returned from five days in Arizona, just the two of us, visiting the Grand Canyon, rafting on the Colorado River, visiting cliff dwellings of Native Americans, walking through a lava flow, eating Navajo Fry Bread, Red River trout, swimming in motel swimming pools and otherwise enjoying ourselves.

One key to successful travel with children and teens is to pay attention to their age-appropriate wants and needs. This was not a year to introduce him to the Metropolitan Opera. Some kids, yes. My grandson, no. I am older and supposed to be smarter. Surely there are places and events in the world that would make my grandchild and me happy at the same time. To insist on my own way and/or to treat every minute of a vacation trip as a teaching moment seems silly.

Let Your Voice Be Heard

Thrive

I am an optimistic person and I pay close attention to my inner voice that rescued me many times. Reading “Thrive” has made me look even deeper into what matters to me the most.

“Thrive” is a well written and researched book. In the book Arianna Huffington discusses how our society has come to define success in terms of money and power and how we need to start measuring success with the third metric that has four pillars: well-being, wisdom, wonder and giving.

The book goes on to introduce strategies for improving these four pillars: sleeping more, meditating and being mindful, disconnecting from all the electronic devices before going to bed and on vacation, being open to serendipity in your life, taking care of pets and volunteering.

“Thrive” examines the meaning and foundation of a good life. Too often, people become engulfed in a shallow existence that is focused…

And There Came a Day...

It wasn’t 20 years ago today, but it was close.

Leaving Bishop McNamara High School in Forestville, Maryland where I had taught for two years right out of college for my alma mater in Colorado was a pretty easy decision. It wasn’t that I didn’t enjoy my years teaching there. I very much did. But home called. Loudly.

2012-01-09 22.16.38 In my classroom at Bishop McNamara… this was the spring of 1994 and I already had secured the interview at Regis Jesuit.

I was hired at Regis Jesuit High School in Aurora, CO in the spring of 1994 and started work there that August.

I was interviewed by the English Department Chair who, in 1988 when I was a senior at Regis Jesuit, moderated the yearbook. He would later become one of my most trusted colleagues.

I was hired by an assistant principal who, in 1985 when I was a sophomore, taught…

Peg-o-Leg's Ramblings

Should a ginormous corporation be allowed to humiliate a child and profit from her pain? Could $167,000,000 in compensation even begin to make up for her suffering? We can only hope so.

I give you, Exhibit A

Oh, the humanity Oh, the humanity

What’s the first thing you notice about this picture? (Besides the vast number of people piled onto 2 chairs.) Your eyes are drawn to the child on the right.

She sits alone. Two skinned knees are proof of a life spent tripping and bumping into coffee tables, and it’s not hard to see why.  Her cats-eyes glasses hint at the weak eyes beneath, while her chubby body attests to a complete lack of athletic skills. Her hand-me-down dress is so short the viewer can practically see both London AND France. From the top of her head (uneven hack-job on too-short bangs) to the soles of her feet (in black knee-socks…

BarkerBytes

Must be the month for getting together with family members as my sister and her family came up Monday evening for a visit.  Uncle Jon had to spoil Parker with a chocolate ice cream cone and Austin was treated to a vanilla ice cream with rootbeer ice.
